Gowanus

This is the industrial district surrounding the Gowanus Canal. The Gowanus Canal was originally built in 1848 to connect with Red Hook’s port in Brooklyn. What was once an industrial place is now having a renaissance. There are hotels for travelers and apartments for people to live in permanently. Whole Foods on 3rd and 3rd is a favorite of locals and people in surrounding neighborhoods. There are boutiques, bars and restaurants not to be missed out on, includingMonte’s Venetian Room, the oldest Italian restaurant in New York which opened in 1906. There is a subway system with four running lines to make transportation efficient.
